A ventilation system comprising a processor in communication with a mechanical ventilator and a user interface comprising a quick start mode for allowing an individual to operate the system with little or no respiratory care expertise until a respiratory care practitioner can take over operation is disclosed. The ventilation system further includes a function that permits seamless transition between modes of operation.

1. A ventilation system comprising:
a mechanical ventilator providing a mechanical ventilation; a processor in operative communication with the mechanical ventilator, the processor being adapted to adjust a predetermined flow rate of the mechanical ventilation in response to a tidal volume as detected; and a user interface in operative communication with the processor, the user interface comprising a quick start mode initiating the mechanical ventilation and delivering a pressurized gas via a single step operation, the pressurized gas delivered under the quick start mode according to the predetermined flow rate using a plurality of preset values for a plurality of ventilation parameters.
