An image retrieval method and system. The method comprises: obtaining a target picture input by a user as a retrieval basis (S101); using a first-type image feature of the target picture to screen sample pictures stored in a picture database so as to obtain a sample picture which complies with a first predetermined condition, and outputting the sample picture obtained through screening as a retrieval result (S102); monitoring whether a reference picture input by the user based on a current retrieval result as a retrieval basis for a next retrieval is obtained (S103); if so, using a second-type image feature of the reference picture to screen sample pictures stored in the picture database so as to obtain a sample picture which complies with a second predetermined condition, outputting the sample picture obtained through screening as a retrieval result, and continuing to perform a monitoring action (S104); and after obtaining a picture saving instruction sent by the user based on the current retrieval result, saving the retrieval result with regard to the picture saving instruction (S105). The retrieval method can improve the comprehensiveness of image retrieval.
