A method of evaluating the metakaryocidal or metakaryostatic activity of a test agent, comprising contacting an isolated population of cultured cells comprising metakaryotic cells with a test agent, under conditions suitable for, and time sufficient for, the agent to kill or inhibit the growth of the metakaryotic cells and evaluating the number of metakaryotic cells and/or size of cell colonies, wherein a reduction in, or complete elimination of the number of metakaryotic cells as compared to a control culture of metakaryotic cells not contacted with the test agent identifies the test agent as having metakaryocidal or metakaryostatic activity.
