Such techniques may include determining intra coding modes based in part on processing performance costs associated with available intra modes and/or generating a block encode order based on intra coding modes, performing encoding, and re-ordering the encoded blocks to a default coding order for bitstream insertion.

1. A computer-implemented method for video coding comprising:
determining, for a current block of video data, processing performance costs for a plurality of intra modes, wherein the processing performance costs are based on one or more reference blocks associated with the plurality of intra modes and a processing order of the one or more reference blocks with respect to the current block; selecting an intra coding mode for the current block based at least in part on the processing performance costs for the plurality of intra modes; and encoding the current block into a bitstream based at least in part on the selected intra coding mode.
