A lighting device (20) outputs first wavelength narrow-band light and second wavelength narrow-band light, which have different peak wavelengths, respectively. An image processing circuit (22) has: a subject kind storage unit (48) that stores the kinds of a plurality of expected subjects that are expected as subjects to be observed; and a subject kind determining circuit (46) that determines expected subject kinds with respect to a single or a plurality of pixels on the basis of a first wavelength image signal that is selectively acquired as image light information relating to the first wavelength narrow-band light by means of an image pickup element (42) in a state wherein at least the first wavelength narrow-band light is applied, a second wavelength image signal that is selectively acquired as image light information relating to the second wavelength narrow-band light by means of the image pickup element in a state wherein at least the second wavelength narrow-band light is applied, and the expected subject kinds stored in the subject kind storage unit. |
