The invention provides compositions and methods for engineering E. coli or other host production bacterial strains to produce fucosylated oligosaccharides, and the use thereof in the prevention or treatment of infection.

A nucleic acid construct comprising an isolated nucleic acid encoding a lactose-utilizing α(1,2) fucosyltransferase enzyme, said nucleic acid being operably linked to one or more heterologous control sequences that direct the production of the enzyme in a host bacteria production strain, wherein the amino acid sequence of said enzyme encoded by said nucleic acid comprises at least 10% and less than 40% identity to SEQ ID NO:2.
