The present invention includes: a positive first lens group G1 that is disposed farthest to the object side; a negative second lens group G2 that is disposed more toward the image side than the first lens group G1; and a positive subsequent group GR that is disposed more toward the image side than the second lens group G2. When varying magnification from the wide-angle end state to the telephoto end state, the first lens group G1 moves toward the object side, while the spacing between the first lens group G1 and the second lens group G2 and the spacing between the second lens group G2 and the subsequent group GR changes. The subsequent group GR includes: a focusing group that moves during focusing; an A group that has a positive refractive power; and a B group that has a negative refractive power and satisfies a prescribed conditional expression with respect to the A group. It is thus possible to provide a variable magnification optical system and the like having excellent optical performance, as well as a more lightweight focusing group for a faster focusing operation. |
