The object of the invention is to increase the thermal load capacity of an internal combustion engine comprising rotary and poppet valves, and to improve the combustion result. To achieve this object, an internal combustion engine comprising at least one combustion chamber (1) is proposed, each chamber being bordered by a cylinder head (5), a wall (2) of a cylinder and the piston head (3) of a reciprocating piston (4) that travels back and forth. Intake valves (7, 8) and exhaust valves (9, 10) are arranged in the cylinder head (5), two intake valves (7, 8) of the poppet valve-type being formed in the cylinder head (5) and two exhaust valves (9, 10) of the rotary valve-type with a rotational axis (11, 12) oriented transversely to the direction of travel of the reciprocating piston (4) being arranged laterally next to the intake valves (7, 8). A passage opening (13, 14) for the outflow of exhaust gas, which passage opening is open to the exterior, is formed in the cylindrical outer wall of each rotary valve, the passage opening (13, 14) of each rotary valve substantially having a flat surface (13a, 14a) which runs parallel to the piston head (3) in the closed position of the rotary valve. |
