A method for displaying a menu of editing functions within a user interface of an image editing tool includes receiving an image and associated metadata captured by a camera (305). The metadata associated with the image are extracted and filtered to reveal metadata related to the photographer's intent (310, 315). The photographer's intent metadata are used to generate one or more selectable image editing functions to be performed by the image editing tool (320). The one or more image editing functions are displayed as editing selections on the user interface of the image editing tool (325).
