[Class 18.] In a metal coffin of the kind in which the sides a, Fig. 1, and ends b are welded together and formed or provided with corrugations, panels, or like raised portions, the bottom being secured by welding or riveting, and rubber &c. packing being provided in the joint between the sides and ends and the lid d, which latter is secured in position by screws, the side-plates, after having been formed or provided with the corrugations &c., have their ends suitably mitred and are pressed into the usual coffin shape between dies, and the endplates are also suitably mitred, after which the sides, ends, and bottom are secured together. An inturned flange on the upper edges of the side and end plates is formed with a groove e, Fig. 4, to hold flexible packing, e.g. rubber cord f, so that an hermetic joint is formed when the lid d is secured by bolts and nuts g, the bolts being secured to the flange. The bottom of the coffin overlies and is secured to an inturned flange on the lower edges of the sides and ends. The coffin is made of malleable metal, e.g. mild steel, copper, aluminium, finished by plating, enamelling, burnishing, or painting, and the usual lining of padding and textile covering is provided. The corrugations &c. may be integral with the sides and ends or consist of separate pieces of metal soldered, welded, or riveted in position.</p> |
