A central computer system 106 identifies a mobile item container 104 in a retail shopping facility 101 as being abandoned, directs a motorized transport unit 102 through the facility to the abandoned item container and causes that motorized transport unit to physically attach to the abandoned mobile item container. The central computer system then directs that transport unit through the facility with the attached item container to a specified destination 804 within the facility. Determination of abandonment may be achieved using information from a video camera 118 or environment sensors, and may involve determining that the item container is both stationary and unattended for at least a predetermined amount of time which may depend on the area within the facility in which the item containers are located, the amount of traffic in those areas, or the presence or absence of items inside the item container. |
