[Class 60.] Disc apparatus.-A machine for grinding parallel flat surfaces on plates, discs, &c. of sandstone, artificial stone, &c. consists of a frame a upon which rotates a turntable band upon which is a vertically adjustable carriage carrying a double arm o supported to swing about a shaft k mounted in bearings e on the carriage. The table b carries a plate h of cast iron &c. to which sand or other abrasive is applied, and the work is held and rotated in contact with the plate by a face-plate n carried by the arm o and driven by a chain l from the shaft k ; a hand-wheel p serves to press the face-plate on the work, and the work against the plate h. The arm o is swung about the shaft k, to carry the work to and fro across the plate h by a link u, which is connected to an eccentric pin t on a toothed wheel s driven by a wheel r carried by a rod i secured to the turntable b ; the gear wheels are located in a casing q secured to the machine frame by a rod.
