[Class 52 (ii).] A chair has a back rest capable of simultaneous vertical and horizontal adjustment, the arm carrying the back-rest being pivoted to a link the other end of which is pivoted to the underpart of the chair, and means are provided for locking the link and arm in any adjusted position. The back-rest is carried by a pillar A at the base of which are fixed two sector plates L with arcuate serrations l. Two similar sector plates G are carried on a fixed member E to which the link O is connected by an eccentric pivot P. A loose member J with arcuate teeth K, M surrounds the link and is connected thereto by a pin T which passes through holes U of slightly larger diameter than the pin. An L-shaped member R can slide to and fro beneath the pivot P and its shorter arm r, connected to the pin T by a helical spring S, fits against the outermost of the flat surfaces Q formed on the eccentric pin P. A sleeve D surrounds the pin and acts as a bearing. A handle O secured coaxially to one end of the pivot P controls the locking and unlocking of the link. As in Fig. 2, when the pivot pin P is in the position indicated by P1, the teeth of the two sets of sector plates are forced into contact with those on the loose member J and the link, plates and back-rest are all locked in position. Rotation of the handle causes it to snap over into the other extreme position P2 and owing to the eccentric action, the two sets of plates move away relatively to each other and the loose member J, owing to the action of the spring S, moving out of contact with the two sets of arcuate teeth, the link C and arm A are free and can be moved to the desired position and there secured by the reverse operation.
