A method for starting an engine, comprising: selecting a cylinder and providing a single fuel injection to the cylinder during a compression stroke of the cylinder for a first combustion event since engine stop in response to a piston of the cylinder being within a second threshold number of crankshaft degrees before the cylinder's top-dead-center (TDC) compression stroke; selecting the cylinder and providing two fuel injections during the compression stroke of the cylinder for a first combustion event since engine stop in response to the piston of the cylinder being within a third threshold number of crankshaft degrees before the cylinder's TDC compression stroke; and selecting the cylinder and providing a single intake stroke and one or more compression stroke fuel injections for a first combustion event since engine stop in response to the piston of the cylinder not being within the third threshold number of crankshaft degrees before the cylinder's TDC compression stroke and not being within the second threshold number of crankshaft degrees before the cylinder's TDC compression stroke.
