The optical transmitter is configured to send an optical signal that is modified by a vibration sensor. The optical receiver configured to receive the optical signal from the vibration sensor, the optical signal comprising fluctuations responsive to vibration of the vibration sensor. The optical signal includes a radio frequency (RF) signal. The vibration sensor is comprised by an optical assembly configured to detect underground vibrations.

A method comprising: sending, via an optical transmitter, an optical signal that is modified by a vibration sensor; and receiving, via an optical receiver, the optical signal from the vibration sensor, the received optical signal comprising fluctuations responsive to a vibration of the vibration sensor; wherein the optical signal includes a radio frequency (RF) signal; wherein an optical assembly comprises the vibration sensor and multiple optical fibers, the optical assembly configured to detect underground vibrations; and wherein the vibration sensor comprises two ends of two optical fibers in the optical assembly, the two ends of the two optical fibers separated by a gap, at least one of the ends configured to move in response to the vibration, movement of the at least one of the ends of the optical fibers causing misalignment between the ends of the optical fibers and attenuation of the optical signal.
