In particular, the devices of the invention are lateral flow assay devices comprising immobilized metal nanoparticle conjugates as the detection means. Methods of using the devices and kits comprising the devices are also described.

An analyte detection device comprising a sample pad; and a detecting complex immobilized on a first surface, wherein the detecting complex comprises a first binding partner coupled to a metallic nanoparticle or metallic nanoshell, wherein the first binding partner is immobilized directly to the first surface by covalent bonding, wherein the first binding partner forms a complex with an unlabeled target analyte, and wherein a spectral shift is indicative of the presence of the analyte; and wherein the sample pad is in operable fluid communication with the first surface.
