An image pickup apparatus comprising: an image pickup element configured to photoelectrically convert an optical image; a first detector configured to perform focus detection by using a focus signal generated from a high frequency component of an image signal outputted from the image pickup element; a second detector configured to perform focus detection by a method different from the focus detection by the first detection unit; and a controller configured to control a drive of a focus lens and configured to control a frame rate, wherein when a predetermined operation to instruct focusing is performed, the controller is configured to switch the frame rate from a first frame rate to a second frame rate, which is faster than the first frame rate, and perform a first operation to drive the focus lens for the focus detection by the first detector, wherein the controller is configured to start driving the focus lens based on a focus detection result by the second detector during performance of the first frame rate but before completion of switching the frame rate from the first frame rate to the second frame rate.
