In described examples of a method and apparatus for fast charging a battery with optimal charging, a system (400) includes a battery charger (420) for applying a voltage to a rechargeable battery (430), and a controller coupled (422) to the battery charger (420) and monitoring at least one of a battery voltage, a battery temperature and the current flowing into the battery (430). The system (400) is configured to apply a charging current from the battery charger (420) by calculating an open cell anode voltage and an anode resistance of the battery (430), and determining the charging current. In additional arrangements, lithium ion plating is prevented by the charging current.
