[Class 111.] A sludge-decomposition chamber is provided with heating devices which dip into the contents of the chamber and are removable without obstruction by the cover of the chamber. A heating coil f, Fig. 1, and surrounding wall m is suspended through the cover of the container v. Liquid drawn from the container through pipes c by a pump g is passed through a pipe h over the coil and returns to the container through an aperture o. The container has its walls and cover insulated, and is provided with a supply pipe a, a sludge discharge pipe e and pumps with connections b for circulating the contents of the container so as to mix them. Guide walls l prevent disturbance of the settled sludge. The pump g may supply liquid to rotating jet tubes i by means of which floating matter is broken up. As shown in Fig. 3, heating coils f are suspended from a head-piece r having a cover s and are surrounded by a double cone m through which the liquid in the container v is circulated by the heat effect. In a further modification shown in Fig. 4, the coil f is suspended in a compartment separated from the container by a partition w, and communicating with it through a dip pipe x and aperture o<1>. Liquid drawn from the compartment by a pump g and returned to the tank through a pipe h<1> is replaced by liquid entering the compartment through the pipe x.</p> |
