381,881. Distillation of solid carbonaceous materials. SOC. DES SCHISTES ET P•TROLES DE FRANCHE-COMT•, Luxeuil Les Bains, Haute Sa¶ne, France. April 29, 1932, No. 12345. Convention date, May 19, 1931. [Class 55 (i).] A process of distilling bituminous schists consists in breaking up the material to grains of 10 to 15 mm. diameter, drying the grains, and passing them through a rotating drum of about 11 metres in length externally heated to about 750‹ C., while steam and an inert gas flow through the drum in an opposite direction, the heating process lasting about a quarter of an hour. The schist from a hopper 7 is passed through a dryer 9 and delivered from a shoot 12 into a rotary steel drum 1 having helical ribs 14, and a longitudinal rib which agitates the material. The hot residue falls through a bell 15 into a water-trough 16, the steam from which passes through the drum, accompanied if necessary by steam from an inlet 17 superheated to 250‹ C. and an inert gas. The distillates are withdrawn through an outlet 13 under a vacuum of about 100 mm. water.
