An isolated nucleic acid molecule comprising: a nucleotide sequence that encodes a synthetic chloroplast transit peptide (CTP) consisting of an amino acid sequence that is derived from an alignment of the amino acid residues of 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) enzymes, wherein each of the amino acid residues of the CTP correspond to the amino acid residue at the corresponding position in an alignment of polypeptides selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs:1-10, wherein the synthetic CTP is at least 80% identical to the chloroplast transit peptide of SEQ ID NO:11; and a heterologous nucleotide sequence encoding a peptide of interest operably linked to the synthetic CTP-encoding nucleotide sequence, wherein the nucleic acid molecule encodes a chimeric polypeptide comprising the peptide of interest and the synthetic CTP.
