A heat exchanger 1 is provided with: a shell 2 having formed therein a heat-exchange chamber 20 filled with gas to be cooled or an intermediate medium, liquid hydrogen and the gas to be cooled being caused to exchange heat directly or indirectly in the heat-exchange chamber 20; a tray 23 provided inside the heat-exchange chamber 20, said tray 23 accommodating liquefied gas and deposits F generated in the heat-exchange chamber 20 by the heat exchange; and a drain mechanism (damming plate 22, drain outlet 25, and drain piping 26) for draining liquefied gas from the tray 23 while the deposits F are left in the tray 23.
