Embodiments disclosed herein relate to a battery pack that may be used in an battery energy storage system. In an embodiment, the battery pack may include an integrated battery management system (BMS) having isolated, distributed, daisy-chained battery module controllers. The daisy-chained battery module controllers may be coupled to a battery pack controller, which may charge and/or discharge the battery pack using the battery modules controllers and a balancing charger.

a battery pack controller coupled to a plurality of daisy-chained battery module controllers to form a communication network, wherein each of the plurality of daisy-chained battery module controllers is configured to be mounted on a battery module and comprises:
a shunt resistor configured to discharge energy from the battery module it is configured to be mounted on;a processor configured to instruct the shunt resistor to discharge energy from the battery module it is configured to be mounted on; anda communication terminal configured to receive a message from the battery pack controller comprising an instruction to remove energy from the battery module it is configured to be mounted on.
