Disclosed are an apparatus and a method for processing a protocol for an intelligent-type remote meter reading system, which establish security-related information in an AMI protocol to ensure compatibility between AMI facilities. The disclosed apparatus for processing a protocol for an intelligent-type remote meter reading system configures security-related information in a reserved area of the AMI protocol generated on the basis of information output from the AMI facilities, and classifies the AMI protocol into a security protocol or a non-security protocol to process data on the basis of the security-related information set in the AMI protocol received from an apparatus for processing a protocol for an intelligent-type remote meter reading system installed in another AMI facility.
