A wireless device and a method of operating the wireless device is disclosed for controlling a transmission power of a wireless transmit receive unit (WTRU). A total transmission power employed by the WTRU when transmitting via a single antenna may be offset by a total transmission power offset value from a total transmission power employed by the WTRU when transmitting via a plurality of antennas.

1. A method for use by a wireless device to control transmission power of a wireless transmit receive unit (WTRU), the method comprising:
transmitting, to the WTRU, a first antenna configuration indication indicating to the WTRU to use one antenna port for transmission; receiving, from the WTRU, a first subframe that was transmitted at a first total transmission power, wherein the first subframe was transmitted via one antenna port of at least two antenna ports; transmitting, to the WTRU, a second antenna configuration indication indicating to the WTRU to use the at least two antenna ports and a total transmission power offset associated with the second antenna configuration indication; and receiving, from the WTRU, a second subframe at a second total transmission power, wherein the second total transmission power is spread across all antennas employed by the WTRU in the transmission of the second subframe, wherein the second total transmission power is a result of a transmit power control formula using the total transmission power offset, and wherein the second subframe was transmitted via the at least two antenna ports.
