[Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii).] In a muffle furnace of the oven type heated by longitudinal combustion chambers having hollow walls through which the oven atmosphere circulates, the inner and outer sides 2, 6 of the hollow walls are formed as separate members and are of different materials, the former being composed, for example, of silicon carbide and the latter of aluminous or silicious fireclay. The outer wall members 6 are constituted by channel-shaped bricks which fit between ribs 3 on the inner members 2, there being interposed fireclay filling pieces 8 which may be formed of different thicknesses so that the conductivity of the inner wall may be varied as desired. The inner members 2 are built up of slabs having interengaging ribs 4 in which air circulation channels 5 are formed. The base 14 of the combustion chamber is supported on spaced bricks 16 and is formed with apertures 15 which provide communication between the circulation channels in the hollow side walls and the spaces between the bricks 16. The upper end of the combustion chamber is closed by two sets of sealing tiles 12, 13, the former being supported on ribs 11 formed integral with the inner wall members 2.
