A solid state lighting unit comprises a substrate and a semiconductor light source mounted over the substrate. A reflective material is provided at exposed lateral edges of the semiconductor light emitting layer structure; and a light absorbing cover layer is provided over the reflective material, with an opening in the light absorbing cover layer around the upper light emitting surface. This arrangement provides improved optical contrast when using a reflective side-coating material. This avoids the need to use a highly absorbing side-coating material, and therefore avoids large optical losses. |
