The present invention provides a load carrying apparatus (10) having a frame (18) and a load transfer belt (15). The load transfer belt (15) transfers load from the load carrying apparatus (10) to the user's hips. A rotary connection (16) and a hinge connection (34) connect between the load transfer belt (15) and the frame (18). The rotary connection (16) permits the belt to rotate about a rotary axis of rotation (33), and the hinge connection (34) permits the belt to rotate about a hinge axis of rotation (35).
