In the field of electrical power networks there is provided a method of determining a fault location (F) in a power transmission medium (16A, 16B, 16C) comprising the steps of:
(a) measuring one or more electrical characteristics (u A (k), u B (k), uc(k), i A (k), i B (k), i C (k)) of a power transmission medium (16A, 16B, 16C) at a local end (S) of the power transmission medium (16A, 16B, 16C);
(b) determining a zero sequence source impedance (z R0 ) at a remote end (R) of the power transmission medium (16A, 16B, 16C) based on the or each measured electrical characteristic (u A (k), u B (k), u C (k), i A (k), i B (k), i C (k)) of the power transmission medium (16A, 16B, 16C); and
(c) calculating a position along the power transmission medium (16A, 16B, 16C) of a fault based on the determined zero sequence source impedance (z R0 ) at the remote end (R) of the power transmission medium (16A, 16B, 16C) so as to determine the fault location in the power transmission medium (16A, 16B, 16C). |
