A method of making a security device (1, Fig.9(a)) comprises forming an array of focussing elements (20, Fig.8(b)) on at least a first region 202 of a focussing element support layer 201, by applying a first transparent curable material 205a either to the focussing element support layer or to a casting tool (221, Fig.8(c)) carrying a surface relief (225, Fig.8(c)) corresponding to the focussing elements, over an first sub-region 202a of the first region 202 and applying a second transparent curable material 205b to a second sub-region 202b of the first region laterally offset from the first sub-region. The first and second transparent curable materials having different optical detection characteristics from one another e.g. different visible colours, different fluorescence, different luminescence or different phosphorescence. Subsequently forming the first and second transparent curable materials with the casting tool; and curing the first and second transparent curable materials in the first region, so as to retain the surface relief. A security document 1 comprises a polymer substrate (2, Fig.9(b)); a focussing element array formed of transparent curable materials 205a, 205b, and opacifying layer 3a, 3b forming a window region in which at least part of the focussing element array is disposed. |
