The method involves controlling data representing an order number, for a current mail item. The data is controlled by monitoring a change of sequence for successive mail items to detect a difference with a predetermined sequence. The current mail item is re-circulated by controlling a sorting machine such that the current mail item carries out a full rotation of a carousel to delay its deposit in a sorting outlet. An independent claim is also included for a mail sorting machine.
