The device (2) has control units (3, 4) e.g. microcontrollers, and a communication channel (6) over which communication signals (9) are transmitted from one of the control units to the other control unit. An activation device (21) is formed such that the communication channel checks whether the former control unit sends the communication signals to the latter control unit for causing an activation of the latter control unit after detecting the communication signals. A voltage supply unit (17) provides an electrical supply voltage (U2) for the latter control unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating control units in a household appliance.
