474,180. Gas-blast switches. STRAUSS, (nÚe RUPPEL), F. Oct. 15, 1936, No. 28090. Convention date, Oct. 15, 1935. [Class 38 (v)] In a multipole pressure gas switch in which each pole has a power switch 1, 2, actuated by gas under pressure admitted by a pipe 10 to a chamber 11, in series with an isolating switch 15, the isolating switches being coupled so as to operate together, the isolating switch of each pole in the closed position retains the associated power switch closed, so that when the isolating switches open, simultaneous opening of the power switches is obtained without coupling them together. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, when the arm 15 of the isolating switch moves away from the cooperating fixed contact 20, a lever 16 is moved aside by a spring 17, thereby releasing a rod 8 connected to the movable contact 2 of the power switch. During the first part of its movement, the arm 15 moves along the wall 21, which has the same potential as the contacts 20 and 2, and a short arc is formed between the arm and the wall. The arm 15 only leaves the wall after the arc between the contacts 1 and 2 has been extinguished. In a modification, Fig. 2, the fixed contact 20 of the isolating switch is directly mounted on the rod 8, and the latter is thereby prevented from moving until the arm 15 starts to move. The arm 15 does not leave. the contact 20 until the arc has been extinguished at the contacts 1, 2. |
