In the fixation of nitrogen, say as oxides of nitrogen by reaction with oxygen or as hydrocyanic acid by reaction with a hydrocarbon, by means of an electric arc whilst employing electrodes of heavy metals, at least one of the electrodes contains an alkali or alkaline earth metal alloyed with the metal of the electrode. The heavy metals referred to are copper, silver, nickel and iron and alloys such as chromium-nickel steel, nickel-copper alloys and the like. These may be alloyed with alkali and/or alkaline earth metals such as sodium, lithium, calcium, strontium and barium. The production of nitrogen oxides from air and the production of hydrocyanic acid by the reaction of nitrogen with methane or petrol vapour is referred to. Specification 23959/13, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.], is referred to. |
