Volatile constituents of oils used for washing gases are recovered by vaporization and selective condensation in one or more fractionating condensers in which the degree of cooling is automatically controlled by the temperature of the vapours issuing from the condenser or last of the condensers. Wash oil containing dissolved hydrocarbons is fed to a preheater 3 provided with a steam jacket 4 and thence to a packed still 5 having a jacket 6. The vapours <PICT:0393041/III/1> evolved pass through the pipe 7 up a dephlegmator 13 in a countercurrent to cooling liquid fed through a spray 14 and then into a fractionating condenser 16 cooled by water supplied through a valve 17, the residual vapours escaping into a chamber 18 provided with a thermostat 20 which controls the valve 17. The cooling liquid collecting at the bottom of the condenser 16 is passed through a pipe 43 and liquid seal 21 to the spray 14 while the liquid collecting at the base of the dephleginator 13 is passed through a seal 23 to a separator 24 from which condensate and water are separated through pipes 27, 26. The residual vapours are condensed in a condenser 29 and separated from water in a separator 31. Specification 273,224, [Class 32, Distilling &c.], is referred to.
