The method involves producing a relative movement between a starting material and a coating device. A coating mass is applied along a direction transverse to advance direction vertically to a coating direction of a surface to-be-coated by the coating device. The amount of the coating mass to the running and coating plane laid over a re-painted vertical surface element is controlled in dependence of the relative movement between starting material and coating device.
