[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Dec. 19, 1936.] [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] A clamping device for frictionally connecting shafts, rods, axles, or tubes, for securing articles thereon, or for securing together the parts of a built-up crankshaft, comprises balls or rollers 9, 4, between opposed conical parts 3, 6, relative axial movement between which applies radial clamping-pressure to the parts 1, 2, to be secured together. In Fig. 1, the parts 2, 3, which may be formed as one part, are slotted to produce resilience, but where a fluid-tight tubejoint is required, the slots are omitted. Cylindrical or conical rollers 4 are caged so as to lie askew of the axis so that a turning movement of the outer sleeve 6 produces relative axial movement between the conical parts and applies clamping-pressure to the connected parts 1, 2. The outer sleeve 6 may be screw-threaded on the member 3, and the parts 1, 2 may have a conical, instead of cylindrical seating surface. Balls lying in complementary helical grooves replace the rollers in one form. In Fig. 4 an internally-coned shaft 2 is expanded into frictional engagement with a surrounding member 10 by a conical member 60 retained by a screwed ring 11, and if desired, forced axially by hydraulic pressure. Loose balls 9 transmit the clamping-pressure. Alternatively skewed rollers, as in Fig. 1, may co-operate with an internally-coned sleeve loosely fitting the cylindrical interior of the shaft, the inner cone 60 being then turned for clamping. In Fig. 1, if a wheel &c. is to be secured to the shaft 1, it is formed as part of the member 2. If two shafts or tubes are to be connected, the member 2 is formed as a bushing receiving the shafts, and a clamping device is provided at both its ends. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the coupled parts 1, 2 may be connected together by a screw-thread or teeth instead of the cylindrical friction surface shown. This statement does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
