397,142. Turning nuts and bolt-heads. MERCER, C., Kendor, Park Road, Radlett, Hertfordshire. Feb. 18, 1932, No. 23297/31. [Class 83 (iii).] Chucks.-Flats are formed on bolt heads or nuts by rotating the bolt &c. on its axis against a tool which is mounted on a holder rotating at twice the speed of rotation of the bolt etc.; or the bolt may be revolved epicyclically round the tool holder. In the apparatus shown for machining six bolts at once six collet chucks 2 are mounted concentrically in the body 1 and three flatting tools 5 on the holder 4, the latter on a spindle 39 driven by the sleeve 18 and worm gear 12 .. 17 from a motor 11 ; the collet chucks are driven at half the speed in the reverse direction by the same motor and gearing 12 .. 17 and pinions 19, 20, 23, 25 driving a sleeve 27 and gear 28 engaging pinions 29, one per chuck. The chuck sleeves 30 are integral with hydraulic cylinders, the plungers 32 of which operate the jaws 34 to grip the bolts 6. The axial feed of the tool holder 4 is effected by a cross-head 53 connected to spindle 39 and reciprocated by a crank pin 50 on a shaft 48 driven from the motor 11 through the shaft 15 and worm gearing 40 .. 47. An oscillating head 7 on the end of the body 1 carries facing tools 9 and chamfering tools 10 and is actuated to move these tools into operative position by means of a cam groove 75 engaged by a roller 73 on a rod 72 reciprocated by a crank pin 70 adjustable on a disc 69 driven by a motor 55 through gearing 56 .. 67. After the flatting operation is completed an automatic control stops the motor 11 and starts the motor 55 which then moves the facing and chamfering tools up to position and drives the chucks at a very much faster speed during the facing operation through the shaft 59, worm wheel 22 which is freely revoluble on sleeve 18 and planetary pinions 20, 23, 25. |
