A mixing segment for an extrusion apparatus comprises a shaft and a plurality of plow elements aligned along a helical path extending about a rotation axis of the shaft. Each plow element includes an outer peripheral arcuate ramp extending radially outwardly along the helical path from a root to an outer tip of the plow element. Methods of manufacturing a mixing segment and methods of manufacturing a honeycomb structure with an extrusion apparatus are also provided.

1. A mixing segment for an extrusion apparatus comprising:
a shaft; and a plurality of plow elements aligned along a helical path extending about a rotation axis of the shaft, wherein each plow element includes an outer peripheral arcuate ramp extending from the shaft radially outwardly along the helical path from a root to an outer tip of the plow element, wherein the arcuate ramp includes a convex helical profile along the helical path, wherein each plow element further includes a step extending radially inward from the outer tip of the plow element toward the shaft, and wherein the step includes a portion extending underneath the respective outer tip of the plow element and wherein the outer tip of one plow element extends over the root of another plow element along the helical path.
