A process for the manufacture of a tonic or supplementary foodstuff rich in protein comprises triturating a nitrogen-rich food comprising products of animal origin and/or a vegetable product, preferably a member of the pea or bean family, which has not been subjected to a process of heating, and incorporating therewith not less than five per cent by weight on the total mixture of salts of calcium, potassium, iron, phosphorus, chlorine, or iodine, and moulding the mixture into a coherent mass or masses. Bean meal, bran, tri-calcium phosphate, sodium chloride, calcium carbonate, ferric oxide, and potassium iodide are triturated together and heated to reduce the moisture content, molasses is stirred into the mixture, and the mass is moulded under pressure into tablets or cakes. The molasses may be omitted, and the heating may be performed by steam jacketing or the injection of steam. Soya beans, linseed, or cotton seeds may be used, a portion of the oil being removed before or after incorporation of the salts. Linseed cake meal and organic salts may be also employed.
