Liquid is applied to travelling artificial filamentary material continuously with its production by a wick through which the liquid is flowing continuously past the point of contact of the yarn with the wick. Such filamentary material includes yarns, threads, straws, tapes, bristles and like materials, the liquid including dyes, sizes, conditioning and solvent liquide and may, if a solvent, contain a small percentage, e.g. 0.1 per cent of the substances of which the filaments consist. The continuous flow of liquid through the wick may be created by siphon action, or the liquid may drip steadily on to the wick. The wick may be arranged as in Specification 366,585. The applied liquid may be used once only, or be circulated repeatedly through the wick, with, if desired, adjustment of composition of the liquid replacing that taken up by the yarn to allow for the constituents taken up by the yarn. The filamentary materials may be yarns or staple fibres of reconstituted cellulose, or cellulose derivatives. As shown in Fig. 1, a number of threads 4 are drawn from bobbins 5 through a spacing reed 7 and over and under rods 8 to form a ribbon, which is passed over a device 10 which applies a solvent. By passage round knife edges 11, 12 and roller 13 and through nipping rollers 15 the softened filaments unite to form a flattened ribbon. The <PICT:0398191/IV/1> <PICT:0398191/IV/2> device 10, Fig. 2, contains a wick 19 dipping into a reservoir 20 with an overflow hole 22. The wick hangs over an extension 23 of the reservoir wall, liquid thus siphoning from 20 into 24 from which it is drawn off at intervals. The cover 27 and dome 28 minimize loss of solvent material by evaporation.
