[Class 17 (i).] Trimming.-A machine for trimming flexible sheet material, such as hides or heel breast flaps, comprises a pair of cutter blades one of which is moved relatively to the other in an orbital path in shearing relation, one of the cutters being hook shaped. A driven shaft 38 has an eccentric pin 58 engaging an antifriction bearing in a lever 66 forked at one end to engage a block pivoted on a pin 74. An arm 64 on the lever carries a hookshaped blade 22 overlapping the edge of a fixed blade 20, a point on the edge of the blade 22 moving in the substantially circular path 19. The fixed blade is carried by a member 86 depending from a plate 98 adjustable laterally, both cutters being adjustable vertically. Work gauges of various forms are provided, depending on the character of the work to be performed. For trimming heel breast flaps, a gauge 134 adapted to engage the side of the heel in advance of the cutters is carried by an arm 146 having a cylindrical shank adjustable in the end of a rod 142 urged upwardly by a spring 144 to a limit determined by an adjustable stop 136. A work gauge may be secured to the moving arm 64. In a modification, especially intended for trimming hides, the rotating shaft driving the cutter is inclined and carried by an overhanging arm, so that the operator may sit with the knees under the cutters, an inclined work support 202 and an adjustable work gauge 234 being provided to assist the operator in feeding the work. In this modification, the moving cutter 222 is secured direct to the end of the lever 266 opposite the eccentric pin 258 and the fixed cutter 220 is secured direct to the plate 298.</p> |
