398,328. Pasting accumulator &c. grids. TENNANT, W. J., 111, Hatton Garden, London.-(Monark Battery Co., Inc.; 4556, West Grand Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A.) Aug. 3, 1932, No. 21793. [Class 87 (ii).] A machine for pasting grids such as accumulator plates comprises a frame consisting of standards 10 supporting rods 11 joined by a cross-piece and provided with collars 18 which also support side-plates 16 carrying the bed 17. The sides 16, bed 17, and the apparatus carried by it can be moved bodily without moving the standards 10, for adjusting the tension of the conveyer belt 26, by moving the collars 18 along the rods 11. This can be done by rotating nuts 18a on the threaded ends of the rods. The belt 26 passes over drums 23, 25 rotated by a motor 21. The plate feeding mechanism consists of a platform 57 which supports a stack of plates 36 which are projected one at a time on to the belt 26 by a reciprocating plate 58. A roller 74 holds the plates firmly against the belt and guides them beneath the hopper C which contains the paste. The hopper is supported a short distance above the belt to allow the plate 36 to pass underneath, only the bottom plate of the pile being allowed to pass by reason of a vertically adjustable plate C<1>. Within the hopper C are shafts 37, 45 carrying blades 38, 46 which feed the paste downwardly into the plate below the hopper, the paste being pressed into the plate by rollers 47, 52, the latter rotating rapidly in the opposite direction to that of roller 47 and serving also to polish and finish the upper side of the plate. The plate is held firmly against the roller 52 by a tiltable platen 79 beneath the conveyer belt, a yieldable roller 83 being also situated beneath the belt and the roller 52. A knife 56 removes superfluous paste from the roller 52. To hold the plates in position on the belt a strip of paper is drawn along with the belt from a roll of paper 100. After having been pasted the plates pass beneath a wiper 92 which consists of a rubber strip placed obliquely across the machine and carried by a rod 88 which rocks in brackets 89 and carries an adjustable weight 94. The grids are then conveyed to tracks 97 which engage ears on the plates and cause the plates to swing into a vertical position as they slide on a chain conveyer 96 which removes the plates from the machine.
