This operating device 10 for vehicles comprises: a plurality of detection electrodes Di, serving as positional detection units, which are provided to a steering wheel 3 of a vehicle 1 so as to detect the grip positions of the steering wheel 3 gripped by the right and left hands; a steering angle sensor 5, serving as a steering angle detection unit, which detects the steering angle of the steering wheel 3; and a control unit 100 which calculates a steering angle speed ωSAS, a right-hand relative angle speed ωhR, and a left-hand relative angular speed ωhL on the basis of the detection signals of the detection electrodes Di and the steering angle sensor 5, and determines the operating state of the steering wheel 3 for each stage using a combination of the steering angle speed ωSAS, the right-hand relative angle speed ωhR, and the left-hand relative angular speed ωhL. The steering angle speed ωSAS is the amount of change in the steering angle. The right-hand relative angle speed ωhR is the amount of change in the right-hand grip position between the grip position of the right hand and the steering wheel 3. The left-hand relative angular speed ωhL is the amount of change in the left-hand grip position between the grip position of the left hand and the steering wheel 3. |
