[Class 53.] A cell consists of strips 1, 2 of aluminium or an aluminium alloy and another metal such as copper wound together in spiral form with intervening absorbent material 3 such as paper or cotton-wool capable of being impregnated with electrolyte. The latter may consist of a solution of caustic soda, or solid caustic soda in granular form may be sprinkled over the absorbent material. The copper strip may have a terminal screw 5 soldered thereto, a connecting tag 6 on the aluminium strip being made by tearing away a part of the strip and bending it, as shown in Fig. 1. The rolled up strips may be held together by bands or they may. be placed in a container 7 and the electrolyte poured in, or the ends of the rolled up strips may be sealed with pitch &c., openings being left for the escape of gases and the introduction of electrolyte. A number of cells in series may be constructed by employing strips of aluminium coated on one side with copper, as described in Specification 391,572. |
