A method of transferring control data between a master device 32 and a slave device 34, 36, 38, 40 over a path including an intermediate device 42, 44, 46, such that the path includes multiple path segments 48, 54, 56, 58, 60 between pairs of devices. Data is transferred on each path segment in frames of data and said frames are synchronized between said path segments. Control data is transmitted in command slots of each frame, wherein command slots comprise control data bit slots which are time windows associated with the transfer of a control data bit over a path segment between the devices. The control data bit slots for each command slot are subdivided into: a first set of bit slots reserved for the transfer of control data in the direction from the master device to the slave device, and a second set of bit slots for transferring control data either in the direction from the master to the slave or vice-versa. The time positions of the command slots on each path segment are offset from that of the command slots on each respective adjacent path segment by at least one control data bit slot. |
