A method for removing wool/hair from a raw skin/hide having a flesh side and a grain side, the method comprising: a) contacting the skin/hide with a composition comprising a protective agent, preferably tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulphate; b) contacting the skin/hide with a composition comprising a depilatory enzyme that is active at an alkaline pH greater than about 8, preferably an alkaline protease such as subtilisin; c) contacting the skin/hide with an activating composition comprising a base, preferably calcium hydroxide and/or sodium hydroxide and a deswelling agent, preferably sodium sulfate, wherein the base activates the depilatory enzyme in b) to act on the depilatory active structures in the skin/hide, and d) removing the wool or hair from the skin/hide. These methods use enzymes wholly without sodium sulfide or with levels of sodium sulfide normally considered too low for successful unhairing. Also disclosed are compositions for use in the methods. |
