Unpainted and unvarnished golf balls are provided with a hardened surface finish by subjecting the surface to the action of a halogen or more than one halogen in admixture or in chemical combination with one another. The reagent may be used in the form of a gas or vapour which may be mixed with the vapour of a suitable liquid such as ethylene dichloride or carbon tetrachloride or may be used dissolved in water, ethylene dichloride, chloroform, glacial acetic acid or other solvent or mixtures thereof. The reaction of the halogen may be controlled by retarding agents such as acetic acid or by varying the concentration of or the time of immersion in the halogen solution: the reaction may be stopped by subsequent treatment with a solution of sodium thiosulphate, sodium sulphite or sodium nitrite. The treated surface is polished with a soft bob or cloth. |
