A transmission illumination apparatus for a microscope has an optically transparent sample mount plate (7) on which a sample (8) is mounted, a surface light source (10) that projects substantially uniform illumination light toward the sample mount plate (7), and a light orientation member (9) that restricts diffusion of the illumination light in relation to at least one direction.
