The invention relates to the use of virus preparations as prophylactic treatment (vaccination) of protected crops: cucumber (Cucumis sativus), zucchini (Cucurbita pepo), pepper (Capsicum annuum), aubergine (Solanum melongena) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) against single stranded RNA virus belonging to the genera Potexvirus, Tobamovirus, Potyvirus and Tospovirus. The invention more particularly relates to the particle size and the particle size distribution in such a virus preparation. An efficient virus preparation has a bimodal distribution comprising two main fractions, wherein the first size fraction has a particle size of 1 to 10 µm and the second size fraction has a particle size of 50 to 500 µm. The first fraction is relevant for the infectivity and the second size fraction is relevant for the stability of the virus preparation. Both fractions are relevant for an effective vaccination under changing conditions as found in practice. |
